A Lapland winter can be cold, but with the right clothes it is also one of the most comfortable and magical times to travel. The key is layering and keeping your hands, feet and head well protected.
Think in layers
- Base layer: thermal tops and bottoms in merino wool or a good synthetic fabric. Avoid cotton, which holds moisture.
- Mid layer: a fleece or wool jumper for insulation.
- Outer layer: a windproof and waterproof jacket and trousers.
Do not forget the extremities
- A warm hat that covers your ears
- Insulated gloves, with a thinner pair underneath
- Thick wool socks and warm, waterproof boots with room for your toes
- A scarf or neck warmer
Useful extras
- Lip balm and moisturiser for dry winter air
- A power bank, because cold weather drains batteries faster
- Sunglasses, as snow can be bright on clear days
- A small daypack for activities
Check what is provided
For some activities, such as snowmobile or husky safaris, operators often provide thermal overalls, boots or gloves. When we help plan your journey, we let you know what is included so you only pack what you need.
